What’s on in Leicester this August?

We may be entering the final month of Summer but Leicester isn’t slowing down! August is a month full of colourful celebrations within the city, and opportunities to spend time with friends and family, enjoying the final month of summer sunshine. Here’s our list of what’s on in Leicester this August!

The month kicks off with an explosion of colour, culture and community-wide celebration with the Caribbean Carnival on the 6th of August! Taking place across the city centre, the carnival brings together the diverse cultures and traditions spread wide across the Caribbean. This summer event is one of the biggest celebrations the city sees annually - and it’s finally back post-pandemic! You really don’t want to miss out on this one, it will liven your spirits, bring you closer to the community, and is the best way to carry the summer vibe through August.

Throughout the month Leicester will also host a great mix of fun and educational events, to keep the kid’s curiosity buzzing whilst school’s out! From the 2nd-4th of August the National Space Centre will be holding in-person Space Cadet Summer Sessions for children in years 7 and 8. The sessions will focus on all the exciting things about space, including the possibility of aliens and astronaut training! For the little ones, from the 10th-24th August there will also be a variety of free Explore the Bees workshops taking place in Orton Square including dance, music, and print, to teach children about the importance of protecting our natural environment.

Speaking of our beautiful natural surroundings, starting from the 6th of August and running until the 30th of October the Natural Art: Gardens in Leicester and Beyond arts and crafts exhibition will be taking place at Newarke Houses. Take some time to head on over and explore the bold and colourful creations inspired by our local natural scenery. Learn about how to take care of your garden and make sure it thrives throughout the summer months, being a hub of natural life.

Of course we couldn’t talk about significant events going on in the city without mentioning the latest addition to Curve theatre’s musical line-up. This month from the 10th - 13th August only, the Curve will be showing the remarkable cold-war story of two of the world’s strongest chess masters through Chess The Musical. The show will also include the international hit singles ‘I Know Him So Well’ and ‘One Night In Bangkok’. With limited showtimes and tickets already running low, make sure you book now to catch this unique production.

For all you petrolheads out there, on the 14th of August the racecourse will be hosting the TSR 2022 Leicester Motorshow, with free entry for all! With new car offers and promotions, classic cars, kids funfair, food stalls, and so much more, the show is a guaranteed fun family day out. This is the first time the event is taking place and is set to be not only the event of the summer but the event of the YEAR for local motoring enthusiasts of all ages!

Rounding off the month as it started with colour and celebration, on the 20th of August the Indian Summer Festival and Community Day. Taking over the Curve theatre and Orton square in the Cultural Quarter of the city, the eclectic festival will celebrate everything from music to dance, and Bollywood to Hip Hop! Not to mention the range of South Asian food and drink vendors, bringing an explosion of flavours to the day. Running throughout the entire day, you can stop by to enjoy the festivities, or spend the whole day there - we can guarantee you won’t get bored!

All of these great events and festivals are taking place within a short walk or quick drive away from The Gresham, located right in the heart of Leicester City Centre. If you’re staying with us and visiting any of these events, make sure you make the most of our Schools Out For Summer or See and Stay packages and offers during your luxury stay.
